A realistic skull worked in moss agate. At 7.3 inches and 4396 g it wants a shelf of its own rather than a desk corner.

The green filaments are mineral dendrites — usually manganese or iron — that grew into the silica while it was still forming. Nothing organic was involved despite the name; the resemblance to moss is coincidence of growth pattern.

The skull is the hardest test of a carver's eye, because everyone already knows what it should look like. The passages that take the longest are the ones you notice least: the transition from temple to cheekbone, and the way the teeth meet.

The green is mineral, not moss, and the resemblance is coincidence of growth.

The filaments inside moss agate are mineral dendrites — usually manganese or iron oxide — that grew into the silica while it was still forming. Nothing organic was ever involved; the resemblance to moss is a coincidence of how crystals branch.

It has been called the gardener's stone across much of Europe for centuries, carried at planting and associated with the agricultural year rather than with any personal quality. Very few stones have an occupation attached to them.
