A skull and snake cut from a single block of emerald, 5 inches, 635 g.

A green beryl-family stone, carved rather than faceted, so it is judged on colour and body rather than on clarity. Inclusions are expected in carving-grade material and are what distinguish natural stone from glass.

The skull is the hardest test of a carver's eye, because everyone already knows what it should look like. The passages that take the longest are the ones you notice least: the transition from temple to cheekbone, and the way the teeth meet.
