See how we make them

A realistic skull cut from a single block of rainbow fluorite, 3 inches, 373 g.

Fluorite is calcium fluoride, soft at 4 on the Mohs scale and possessed of perfect cleavage in four directions — carving it is a matter of working with those planes rather than against them. The colour banding in purple, green and clear records successive stages of growth.

The skull is the hardest test of a carver's eye, because everyone already knows what it should look like. The passages that take the longest are the ones you notice least: the transition from temple to cheekbone, and the way the teeth meet.

Ships worldwide. This piece is held at our workshop and ships internationally.

  • One of a kind

Every carving is cut from its own block of rough. The photographs on this page show the exact piece you will receive — not a sample from the same batch.

  • Natural stone, untreated

100% natural stone, never dyed or reconstituted. Veins, inclusions and small shifts in colour are how the material formed; they are marks of origin rather than faults.

  • Carved by hand

Cut, shaped and polished by hand. Proportions differ a little from piece to piece because each one follows the block it came out of.

  • Checked and packed

Hand-inspected before dispatch and shipped in shockproof packaging.

The Material

Rainbow Fluorite — The Clear Head

Soft enough to scratch with a coin, and long carried by people who think for a living.

Fluorite gave its name to fluorescence — many specimens glow under ultraviolet light, and the phenomenon was described from this mineral first. It is calcium fluoride, soft at 4 on the Mohs scale, with perfect cleavage in four directions. Carving it means working with those planes rather than against them.

The colour banding in purple, green and clear records successive stages of growth, each layer a different chemistry. Fluorite has been called the study stone for well over a century, which is unusual — most such associations are much younger than they claim.

Sorting Before Solving
Ordered Mind

Sorting Before Solving

Fluorite is traditionally associated with organising thought rather than generating it — believed to help arrange what is already there into an order that can be worked with.

Keep it beside the notes rather than beside the screen.

The Long Session
Study Stone

The Long Session

Its reputation among students and researchers is old and consistent, and is specifically about sustained concentration rather than a burst of it.

Set it where you work for hours, not where you work for minutes.

Turning Down the Noise
Filter

Turning Down the Noise

Traditionally credited with reducing mental clutter, it is often kept in rooms that have too much going on in them.

Place it in the busiest corner of the room, not the quietest.

Handle Gently
Soft Stone

Handle Gently

At 4 on the Mohs scale fluorite scratches easily — a copper coin will mark it. This is part of its character rather than a flaw.

Keep it away from keys and other stones; a shelf of its own suits it.

Why We Carve Skulls
The Form

Why We Carve Skulls

The skull is the oldest symbol of transformation: what remains, what endures, what is left when everything temporary has gone. Carved in stone it reads less as death and more as clarity.

Turn it to face you when you want to be honest; turn it outward when you want to be left alone.

Our belief

Cut, not created

We believe a carving should carry the memory of the stone it came from. Every piece is cut from natural material, one at a time, and none of them repeat.
