A realistic skull worked in colorful thread jasper. At 7.6 inches and 5337 g it wants a shelf of its own rather than a desk corner.

Jasper is opaque microcrystalline quartz coloured by iron and other mineral impurities. It shows no translucency, which puts all the emphasis on how the surface is modelled rather than on any light passing through.

Carving a skull leaves nowhere to hide — the proportions are familiar enough that any error reads immediately. Most of the working time goes into the orbits and the line of the jaw.
