Natural rose quartz is milky and unevenly coloured, with the pink drifting through the body of the stone. Dyed material is usually more saturated, more uniform, and often clearer than natural rose quartz has any business being — clarity plus strong even pink is the combination to be suspicious of. Yes, in prolonged direct sunlight, for the same reason amethyst does. Rose quartz kept on a sunny windowsill pales over months and does not recover. Any position out of direct sun is fine; the stone is otherwise stable.

Because the concentration of colouring inclusions varies enormously between deposits and even within one block. Pale material is not inferior — it is often clearer and takes finer detail — but it is usually cheaper, and a carving cut from the pale end of a block reads almost white in photographs.

Rounded, soft subjects. The stone is translucent enough that light enters the form and scatters, which flatters curves and softens detail; that is why hearts, animals and smooth-featured skulls dominate here. Sharp detail is possible but partly lost, since the light diffuses across it.
