See how we make them

An alpaca cut from a single block of elephant skin jasper, 3.7 inches, 151 g.

Jasper is opaque microcrystalline quartz coloured by iron and other mineral impurities. It shows no translucency, which puts all the emphasis on how the surface is modelled rather than on any light passing through.

The difficulty in an animal figure is mass rather than detail: getting the shoulder, haunch and neck to carry weight convincingly while staying within the block the carver started from.

Ships worldwide. This piece is held at our workshop and ships internationally.

  • One of a kind

Every carving is cut from its own block of rough. The photographs on this page show the exact piece you will receive — not a sample from the same batch.

  • Natural stone, untreated

100% natural stone, never dyed or reconstituted. Veins, inclusions and small shifts in colour are how the material formed; they are marks of origin rather than faults.

  • Carved by hand

Cut, shaped and polished by hand. Proportions differ a little from piece to piece because each one follows the block it came out of.

  • Checked and packed

Hand-inspected before dispatch and shipped in shockproof packaging.

The Material

Elephant Skin Jasper — The Old Hide

Wrinkled, grey-brown, and named by whoever first noticed what it looked like.

Elephant skin jasper takes its name from a surface pattern of fine creases and colour variation that reads convincingly as hide. The wrinkling is genuine internal structure rather than a surface texture, so it survives polishing.

Like most stones sold under a jasper name it is a microcrystalline quartz coloured by mineral impurities, and the name describes the look rather than the chemistry.

Age Worn Well
Old Hide

Age Worn Well

The stone's traditional reading follows its appearance: something that has been through weather and is still intact.

Kept where you will see it on days that feel long.

Memory and Patience
Elephant

Memory and Patience

The name attaches the elephant's own associations — long memory, unhurried progress — to the material.

Set it where a slow undertaking is being tracked.

Grounding
Earth Tone

Grounding

Its muted browns and greys tie it to the usual grounding reading of earth-coloured stone.

Held rather than displayed.

Something to Handle
Texture

Something to Handle

The creased surface gives it more to feel than most polished stone, which is part of why it is carried.

Kept in a pocket rather than on a shelf.

Why We Carve Animals
The Form

Why We Carve Animals

Animals in stone are old — older than writing. What a carved animal carries is whatever its own culture gave it: the elephant's memory, the owl's night sight, the bear's patience. The stone lends its own weight to the borrowing.

Keep it in view rather than in storage; these are traditionally companions rather than talismans.

Our belief

Cut, not created

We believe a carving should carry the memory of the stone it came from. Every piece is cut from natural material, one at a time, and none of them repeat.
