See how we make them

A realistic skull cut from a single block of tera hertz, 3 inches, 317 g.

A natural stone worked in the round, its colour and pattern formed over geological time rather than applied. Whatever markings the block carried run right through it.

Carving a skull leaves nowhere to hide — the proportions are familiar enough that any error reads immediately. Most of the working time goes into the orbits and the line of the jaw.

Ships from Tucson, Arizona. This piece is held in our United States warehouse and can only be delivered within the United States.

  • One of a kind

Every carving is cut from its own block of rough. The photographs on this page show the exact piece you will receive — not a sample from the same batch.

  • Natural stone, untreated

100% natural stone, never dyed or reconstituted. Veins, inclusions and small shifts in colour are how the material formed; they are marks of origin rather than faults.

  • Carved by hand

Cut, shaped and polished by hand. Proportions differ a little from piece to piece because each one follows the block it came out of.

  • Checked and packed

Hand-inspected before dispatch and shipped in shockproof packaging.

The Material

Tera Hertz — The Disputed Stone

Sold as a stone, and worth knowing what it actually is.

Terahertz material is dense, metallic silver-grey and takes an unusually bright polish. It is worth being straight about its origin: most material on the market is widely understood in the trade to be a manufactured silicon product rather than a mined mineral, and the name refers to a claimed emission in the terahertz frequency range that has no independent scientific confirmation.

What is not disputed is how it behaves as a carving material. It is hard, holds a mirror finish better than almost anything else here, and stays notably cool to the touch.

A Real Property
Cool to Touch

A Real Property

Its high thermal conductivity means it draws heat from the hand quickly and stays cool longer than stone of the same size.

Held rather than displayed; the temperature is the point.

The Brightest Polish
Mirror Finish

The Brightest Polish

It takes a harder, brighter polish than any natural stone in this shop.

Kept where it can catch light directly.

Recent Arrival

It appeared on the market in the 2010s, which makes it one of the newest things sold in this category.

Bought for the object rather than for tradition.

What We Do Not Claim
Honest Note

What We Do Not Claim

We make no claim about terahertz emission or any effect from it, because there is no evidence we would be willing to stand behind.

Judged on how it looks and feels, which is considerable.

Why We Carve Skulls
The Form

Why We Carve Skulls

The skull is the oldest symbol of transformation: what remains, what endures, what is left when everything temporary has gone. Carved in stone it reads less as death and more as clarity.

Turn it to face you when you want to be honest; turn it outward when you want to be left alone.

Our belief

Cut, not created

We believe a carving should carry the memory of the stone it came from. Every piece is cut from natural material, one at a time, and none of them repeat.
