See how we make them

A crocodile worked in blue aventurine. At 12.2 inches and 1420 g it wants a shelf of its own rather than a desk corner.

Aventurine is quartzite carrying thousands of tiny platy inclusions, and the shimmer that moves across the surface comes from those flakes reflecting independently. The blue body colour sits behind the sparkle rather than in it.

Worked in the round from a single block, with the form chosen to suit what that block could give rather than imposed on it.

Ships worldwide. This piece is held at our workshop and ships internationally.

  • One of a kind

Every carving is cut from its own block of rough. The photographs on this page show the exact piece you will receive — not a sample from the same batch.

  • Natural stone, untreated

100% natural stone, never dyed or reconstituted. Veins, inclusions and small shifts in colour are how the material formed; they are marks of origin rather than faults.

  • Carved by hand

Cut, shaped and polished by hand. Proportions differ a little from piece to piece because each one follows the block it came out of.

  • Checked and packed

Hand-inspected before dispatch and shipped in shockproof packaging.

The Material

Blue Aventurine — The Calm Tide

Quartz shot through with mineral glitter, kept by people whose minds run louder than they would like.

Blue aventurine is quartz seeded with tiny plates of dumortierite — inclusions that catch the light and give the stone a faint internal shimmer, an effect mineralogists named aventurescence, from the Italian for 'by chance'. Most of what reaches the market is quarried in India and Brazil.

The colour sits between denim and storm water: cool, slightly clouded, never bright. It is one of the few blue stones that manages to be calming without being cold, which is largely why it ends up in a pocket rather than in a cabinet.

Clear Speech
Throat & Brow

Clear Speech

Blue aventurine is traditionally associated with the throat and third-eye chakras, and is believed to help a person say the accurate thing rather than the loud one.

Hold it for a few breaths before a call you have been putting off all week.

Composure Under Pressure
Cool Head

Composure Under Pressure

It is said to take the heat out of a reaction — traditionally carried by people who would rather answer in an hour than in a second.

Keep it in the pocket you reach for when you are irritated, and let the reaching itself be the pause.

Settling a Space
Quiet Room

Settling a Space

In practice blue stones are placed where thinking happens: desks, studios, bedside tables. Aventurine is believed to hold a room at a lower volume.

Set it beside the screen you work at, or wherever the noise of the household collects.

Rest & Release
Steady Breath

Rest & Release

Cool to the touch and unhurried in colour, it is a common companion for breathwork and wind-down routines that ask the nervous system to slow down.

Rest it on the chest or in an open palm for the length of ten slow breaths.

Why We Carve Animals
The Form

Why We Carve Animals

Animals in stone are old — older than writing. What a carved animal carries is whatever its own culture gave it: the elephant's memory, the owl's night sight, the bear's patience. The stone lends its own weight to the borrowing.

Keep it in view rather than in storage; these are traditionally companions rather than talismans.

Our belief

Cut, not created

We believe a carving should carry the memory of the stone it came from. Every piece is cut from natural material, one at a time, and none of them repeat.
