An eagle worked in red agate. At 9.4 inches and 2834 g it wants a shelf of its own rather than a desk corner.

Agate is banded chalcedony — silica that filled a cavity in layers over a very long period. Those bands are a growth record, so a cut surface is always a cross-section through something that formed slowly.

The difficulty in an animal figure is mass rather than detail: getting the shoulder, haunch and neck to carry weight convincingly while staying within the block the carver started from.
