See how we make them

A realistic skull worked in rose quartz. At 7.7 inches and 5735 g it wants a shelf of its own rather than a desk corner.

The pink is caused by microscopic inclusions rather than by any dye, which is also why the stone is milky instead of transparent. Colour concentrates in bands and clouds within the block, so no two carvings take the light the same way.

Carving a skull leaves nowhere to hide — the proportions are familiar enough that any error reads immediately. Most of the working time goes into the orbits and the line of the jaw.

Ships worldwide. This piece is held at our workshop and ships internationally.

  • One of a kind

Every carving is cut from its own block of rough. The photographs on this page show the exact piece you will receive — not a sample from the same batch.

  • Natural stone, untreated

100% natural stone, never dyed or reconstituted. Veins, inclusions and small shifts in colour are how the material formed; they are marks of origin rather than faults.

  • Carved by hand

Cut, shaped and polished by hand. Proportions differ a little from piece to piece because each one follows the block it came out of.

  • Checked and packed

Hand-inspected before dispatch and shipped in shockproof packaging.

The Material

Rose Quartz — The Open Heart

The most given stone in the world, and still the one people are most awkward about buying for themselves.

Rose quartz owes its colour to microscopic mineral fibres threaded through the quartz in quantities too small to see. It is why the pink is cloudy rather than clear, and why a thick piece glows instead of sparkling. Most of it is quarried in Brazil, Madagascar and South Africa.

It has been carved into beads and amulets for at least seven thousand years — Assyrian, Egyptian, Roman. Almost every culture that got hold of it arrived at the same association independently: this is the stone about love, and it has never been reassigned.

Love & Compassion
Heart Centre

Love & Compassion

Rose quartz is the classic heart-chakra stone, traditionally believed to soften the guard a person keeps up and to make warmth easier to give and to receive.

Hold it over the sternum for a few breaths at the end of a day that required armour.

Self-Worth
Kind Voice

Self-Worth

It is most often recommended for the way a person speaks to themselves — said to support the slow work of self-forgiveness rather than any sudden change.

Keep it by the mirror, and let seeing it interrupt the sentence you were about to say about yourself.

Harmony at Home
Home Stone

Harmony at Home

In folk practice rose quartz is placed in bedrooms and shared rooms — believed to keep the temperature of a household gentle, particularly after conflict.

Set a piece where the family gathers, and another wherever the arguments tend to end.

Grief & Comfort
Gentle Repair

Grief & Comfort

It is the stone most commonly given after a loss, traditionally associated with comfort and with the gradual settling of a heart that has been through something.

Give it, or keep it in hand while you sit with someone who does not need you to say anything.

Why We Carve Skulls
The Form

Why We Carve Skulls

The skull is the oldest symbol of transformation: what remains, what endures, what is left when everything temporary has gone. Carved in stone it reads less as death and more as clarity.

Turn it to face you when you want to be honest; turn it outward when you want to be left alone.

Our belief

Cut, not created

We believe a carving should carry the memory of the stone it came from. Every piece is cut from natural material, one at a time, and none of them repeat.
