See how we make them

A sakura realistic skull cut from a single block of flower agate, 5.7 inches, 2188 g.

The blossoms are chalcedony spherulites — silica that crystallised outward from seed points while the agate was forming. Each one is a genuine three-dimensional structure, so cutting through the block slices them at different depths and no two faces bloom the same way.

The skull is the hardest test of a carver's eye, because everyone already knows what it should look like. The passages that take the longest are the ones you notice least: the transition from temple to cheekbone, and the way the teeth meet.

Ships worldwide. This piece is held at our workshop and ships internationally.

  • One of a kind

Every carving is cut from its own block of rough. The photographs on this page show the exact piece you will receive — not a sample from the same batch.

  • Natural stone, untreated

100% natural stone, never dyed or reconstituted. Veins, inclusions and small shifts in colour are how the material formed; they are marks of origin rather than faults.

  • Carved by hand

Cut, shaped and polished by hand. Proportions differ a little from piece to piece because each one follows the block it came out of.

  • Checked and packed

Hand-inspected before dispatch and shipped in shockproof packaging.

The Material

Flower Agate — The Slow Bloom

Chalcedony that crystallised outward from seed points, and looks exactly like what it did.

Flower agate was only brought to market in quantity from Madagascar in the late 2010s, which makes it one of the newer stones in wide circulation. The blossoms are chalcedony spherulites — silica that crystallised outward from seed points while the agate around them was still forming.

Each one is a genuine three-dimensional structure rather than a surface pattern, so cutting through the block slices them at different depths and no two faces bloom the same way. The resemblance to flowers is coincidence of growth, which somehow makes it better.

Potential, Before It Shows
Seed Point

Potential, Before It Shows

The stone is traditionally read as an image of something already present but not yet visible, and is associated with the early and unglamorous part of any undertaking.

Keep it where the thing you have not told anyone about is being worked on.

Not Rushing It
Slow Open

Not Rushing It

Because the blooms formed gradually outward, the stone is linked in practice with allowing things to develop at their own pace.

Hold it when you are tempted to force a decision early.

Tending Rather Than Pushing
Nurture

Tending Rather Than Pushing

Flower agate is commonly associated with care and with looking after what is growing, including oneself.

Set it near whatever you are responsible for keeping alive.

Small Pleasures
Quiet Joy

Small Pleasures

Its soft pink and cream reading has made it a stone associated with contentment rather than excitement.

Place it somewhere ordinary that you pass every day.

Why We Carve Skulls
The Form

Why We Carve Skulls

The skull is the oldest symbol of transformation: what remains, what endures, what is left when everything temporary has gone. Carved in stone it reads less as death and more as clarity.

Turn it to face you when you want to be honest; turn it outward when you want to be left alone.

Our belief

Cut, not created

We believe a carving should carry the memory of the stone it came from. Every piece is cut from natural material, one at a time, and none of them repeat.
