See how we make them

A realistic skull cut from a single block of plum blossom jade, 4.4 inches, 1047 g.

A natural stone worked in the round, its colour and pattern formed over geological time rather than applied. Whatever markings the block carried run right through it.

Carving a skull leaves nowhere to hide — the proportions are familiar enough that any error reads immediately. Most of the working time goes into the orbits and the line of the jaw.

Ships worldwide. This piece is held at our workshop and ships internationally.

  • One of a kind

Every carving is cut from its own block of rough. The photographs on this page show the exact piece you will receive — not a sample from the same batch.

  • Natural stone, untreated

100% natural stone, never dyed or reconstituted. Veins, inclusions and small shifts in colour are how the material formed; they are marks of origin rather than faults.

  • Carved by hand

Cut, shaped and polished by hand. Proportions differ a little from piece to piece because each one follows the block it came out of.

  • Checked and packed

Hand-inspected before dispatch and shipped in shockproof packaging.

The Material

Plum Blossom Jade — The Winter Flower

Named for the blossom that opens before the snow has gone.

Plum blossom jade — 梅花玉 — comes from Henan province, where the dark ground carries pale mineral inclusions that scatter across it like plum blossom on a branch. It is a trade name rather than a mineral species; the stone is closer to a porphyry than to jade.

The plum blossom is the flower that opens in late winter, before anything else and often through snow. In Chinese poetry it stands for endurance rather than for beauty, which gives the stone an association most flower-patterned materials do not have.

Opening Early
Winter Flower

Opening Early

The plum blossom's meaning in Chinese tradition is perseverance through cold — the flower that arrives before conditions improve.

Kept through the hard stretch rather than after it.

Old Associations
Scholar's Stone

Old Associations

Plum blossom imagery belongs to the scholar-gentleman tradition, and stones carrying it were kept on writing desks.

Set it where you work with words.

Contrast
Dark Ground

Contrast

The pale inclusions only read because the ground is dark, which is the whole composition of the stone.

Place it against a light surface rather than a dark one.

Turning of a Season
Renewal

Turning of a Season

Its traditional reading is of a season changing rather than of a state being reached.

Given at the turn of a year, by custom.

Why We Carve Skulls
The Form

Why We Carve Skulls

The skull is the oldest symbol of transformation: what remains, what endures, what is left when everything temporary has gone. Carved in stone it reads less as death and more as clarity.

Turn it to face you when you want to be honest; turn it outward when you want to be left alone.

Our belief

Cut, not created

We believe a carving should carry the memory of the stone it came from. Every piece is cut from natural material, one at a time, and none of them repeat.
