See how we make them

A realistic skull cut from a single block of black obsidian, 3 inches, 255 g.

Obsidian is not a crystal at all. It is volcanic glass — lava that met air or water and cooled too fast for a lattice to form. With no internal structure it polishes to a flat true black and breaks along the curved conchoidal edge you can see wherever the carver left the surface unsmoothed.

The skull is the hardest test of a carver's eye, because everyone already knows what it should look like. The passages that take the longest are the ones you notice least: the transition from temple to cheekbone, and the way the teeth meet.

Ships worldwide. This piece is held at our workshop and ships internationally.

  • One of a kind

Every carving is cut from its own block of rough. The photographs on this page show the exact piece you will receive — not a sample from the same batch.

  • Natural stone, untreated

100% natural stone, never dyed or reconstituted. Veins, inclusions and small shifts in colour are how the material formed; they are marks of origin rather than faults.

  • Carved by hand

Cut, shaped and polished by hand. Proportions differ a little from piece to piece because each one follows the block it came out of.

  • Checked and packed

Hand-inspected before dispatch and shipped in shockproof packaging.

The Material

Black Obsidian — The Shadow Guardian

Volcanic glass born of fire and sudden cold, kept close by those who prefer truth to comfort.

Obsidian is not a crystal at all. It is volcanic glass — lava that met air or water and cooled too fast to form a lattice. What remains is a stone with no internal structure, only surface: black, glossy and honest. Cultures from Mesoamerica to Anatolia worked it into blades and scrying mirrors long before anyone had a word for geology.

Hold a polished piece up to the light and it gives nothing back but your own reflection, edged in smoke. That is the whole character of the stone. Obsidian is traditionally called a guardian not because it adds anything to you, but because it refuses to soften what is already there.

Root Anchor

Grounding & Protection

Obsidian is traditionally associated with the root chakra and is believed to draw scattered energy back down into the body — the reason it is so often kept by the door or carried while travelling.

Set it where you enter your home, or hold it in your palm for a minute before a difficult conversation.

Honest Mirror

Shadow Work

Long used as a scrying surface, obsidian is said to surface what is being avoided rather than soothe it. Practitioners reach for it during journalling, therapy weeks, and any honest reckoning with themselves.

Keep it beside your journal and hold it for a few breaths before writing the entry you would rather skip.

Threshold Keeper

Clearing the Room

In folk practice obsidian is placed at thresholds and corners to mark the boundary of a space, and is believed to hold that edge steady when a room feels unsettled or over-full.

Place one in the darkest corner of a room after guests leave, or on the desk where the arguments happen.

Steady Presence

Rest & Recovery

Its weight and cool surface make obsidian a common companion for winding down. It is believed to encourage the kind of stillness that lets the body settle after a long, over-stimulated day.

Rest it on the nightstand — not under the pillow; its energy is traditionally considered too active for sleep.

The Form

Why We Carve Skulls

The skull is the oldest symbol of transformation: what remains, what endures, what is left when everything temporary has gone. Cut in obsidian it reads less as death and more as clarity.

Turn it to face you when you want to be honest; turn it outward when you want to be left alone.

Our belief

Cut, not created

We believe a carving should carry the memory of the stone it came from. Every piece is cut from natural material, one at a time, and none of them repeat.
