Choosing by stone

Most people arrive with a stone already in mind, and the reason is usually the meaning that has grown up around it. Amethyst is the one traditionally associated with calm and clear thinking. Rose quartz carries the language of the heart. Black obsidian - volcanic glass that cooled too fast to crystallise - is the traditional protection stone. Green aventurine is spoken of in terms of growth and luck, howlite in terms of quiet. None of that is medicine and we do not sell it as such; it is simply the vocabulary these stones have carried for a long time, and it is a perfectly good way to choose a piece you will actually want to pick up.

What you are actually buying

The stone decides where the veins, clouds and fractures fall, so no two skulls come out the same. The photographs on every listing are of the exact piece that ships to you, not a sample from the same batch. Sizes run from palm-sized carvings around 2 inches to display pieces over 6 inches.

One thing worth knowing

The famous ancient crystal skulls in museum collections - the Mitchell-Hedges skull and its relatives - were made in 19th-century Europe. Electron microscopy found the rotary tool marks. We would rather tell you that than sell you a legend. The stone is real and the carving is real, and that is enough.
